DAY 01 Arrive in Adelaide

Explore the city on foot. If it's a market day, visit Adelaide Central Market (open Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays), which is the largest food and produce market in Southern Hemisphere, or take a behind-the-scenes tour at Haigh's Chocolates Visitors Centre (11am, 1pm & 2pm). If time permits, find out more about the Aboriginal culture by joining a Bush Food Trail tour and enjoy Bush Tucker in the city.

Stroll through the Rundle Mall shopping precinct for both department store and boutique shopping. This evening, dine along any number of Adelaide's 'eat streets', such as Gouger Street, Rundle Street and Hutt Street in the city, and O'Connell Street and Melbourne Street in nearby North Adelaide.

ImageDAY 02 Adelaide to Tanunda
Distance: 74km, Approx. Travel Time: 1HR 10MIN

Head north through the Hills towards Barossa. At Williamstown, visit the Whispering Wall for a unique acoustic experience. Lyndoch is home to the picturesque Lyndoch Lavender Farm and historic Yaldara Estate. The Barossa, Australia's most famous wine region is known for outstanding festivals, food and wine. With over 60 cellar doors to visit, you'll never be short of somewhere to taste Australia's most famous reds, whites and sparklings. Some favourites include Peter Lehmann Wines, Wolf Blass, Penfolds', Jacob's Creek, Rockford Wines and more. At Seppeltsfield Wines, take a tour of this historic winery and sample rare fortified wines.

On the Penfolds' fabulous 'Make Your Own Blend' wine tour, visitors can blend their own wine and take home their unique blend as souvenir. Angaston is an English-style village in the Barossa foothills, home to Angas Park Fruits, Barossa Valley Cheese Company and great coffee at Blond Coffee. Maggie Beer's Farm Shop is a good stop for lunch or to stock up on her delicious gourmet product. For a bird's eye view of the Barossa, stand on Mengler Hill for an uninterrupted view over the region. Stay overnight in the Barossa in a resort or vineyard retreat - there is no shortage of excellent accommodation.

ImageDay 03 Tanunda to Clare Valley
Distance: 100km, Approx. Travel Time: 1HR

Historic town, sweeping farmland and the world-famous Clare Valley vineyards combine to make a region that's ideal for a relaxing getaway. There are more than 30 cellar doors within a 15-minute drive from each other. Visit Sevenhill Winery, where early Jesuit settlers founded the cellars in the mid-nineteenth century. Enjoy lunch at Skillogalee, one of the 30 local cellar doors. Hire a bicycle or walk the 25-kilometre Riesling trail that follows the former railway line between Auburn and Clare. It is an ideal way to see the valley, explore its heritage and visit cellar doors, art studio and attractions. Visit the heritage of Mintaro; its remarkable buildings include the magnificent 19th century mansion Martindale Hall. Explore Auburn for its many buildings of architectural and historical merit, tearooms, craft shops, galleries and antique shops.

Day 04 Clare Valley to Wilpena Pound
Distance: 382km , Approx. Travel Time: 4HR

From Clare Valley, travel north to Melrose, the oldest town in the Flinders Ranges. It has a beautiful setting at the foot of Mount Remarkable. Be sure to stop at the North Star Hotel for a drink or bite to eat. Continue north to the former railway town of Quorn and join a camel tour or ride the Pichi Richi Railway through the beautiful Pichi Richi Pass. Then travel on to Wilpena Pound, where the mountain ranges open out into an enormous natural amphitheatre, rimmed with peaks and lined with native pine forest. The Pound has breathtaking scenery, rich Aboriginal and European history, wildlife and walking trails. Wilpena Pound Resort and Rawnsley Park Station are ideal accommodation bases next to Wilpena Pound.

Day 05 Wilpena Pound to Parachilna
Distance: 77km, Approx. Time Travel: 1HR

Spend today exploring the area either by the walking trail or on a guided 4WD tour, keeping an eye out for native animals and wildflowers (seasonal especially in September & October). Scenic flights are available (such as a 30-minute flight over the Pound) and are a great way to truly appreciate the grandeur of this remarkable area. In the afternoon, travel to Parachilna, where a stop at the Prairie Hotel is a must! The hotel enjoys an Australia-wide reputation for its fine "native" cuisine and luxury outback accommodation.

 

Day 06 Wilpena Pound to Adelaide
Distance: 450km, Approx. Travel Time: 5HR

Travel to Adelaide via Peterborough and Burra and experience the fascinating pioneer history of these small towns. The majesty and beauty of the great steam era of railways has been well preserved in Peterborough - the only place in the Southern Hemisphere where three different rail gauges still exist. Burra was established when copper ore was found in the area in 1845. The boom that followed made Burra one of Australia's busiest towns and saved the economy of the young colony. Much of its colourful history and character are intact as the whole town is protected as one of Australia's most important heritage sites. The Visitor Information Centre will give you the key and the map for the Heritage Passport Trail.

Day 07 Adelaide to Glenelg
Distance: 12km, Approx. Travel Time: 20MIN

Walk along North Terrace which is also known as the cultural boulevard and explore the Art Gallery of South Australia and the South Australian Museum. Alternatively, take the tram and head down to Adelaide's favourite seaside suburb, Glenelg. Walk along the Esplanade, explore the shops of Jetty Road, stop for a coffee break at the beachside hotels or Holdfast Shores Marina Complex where there are a variety of cafés and restaurants. Take a high speed ride with Hel-a-va Jet Boats, visit Rodney Fox Shark Experience - a unique Shark Museum, swim with wild dolphins with Temptation Sailing (early morning only) and visit the Beachouse entertainment complex complete with waterslide.

Day 06 Wilpena Pound to Arkaroola
Distance: 207km, Approx. Travel Time: 3.5HR

Drive from Wilpena through the spectacular Brachina and Bunyeroo Gorges, and discover the Ediacaran fossil period embedded in the rock face. Take a short detour into the stunning Aroona Valley. Explore the old copper mines at Blinman and have an early lunch at the hotel here. Continue north, taking a detour into the spectacular Chambers Gorge before arriving at Arkaroola.

Arkaroola is a private wilderness sanctuary and one of Australia's most spectacular areas. Rich in history, the area features rugged mountains, towering granite peaks, magnificent gorges and waterholes, and of course, wildlife including the shy Yellow-footed-Rock-Wallaby. Should time permit, join Arkaroola's famous Ridgetop Tour, which features breathtaking scenery from the back of a 4WD. The highlight of the tour is Siller Lookout that gives visitors the impression of being on top of the world. Alternatively, explore self-drive or walking trails around the sanctuary (or relax and do very little at one of the waterholes).

When night falls, take a tour of the night skies from Arkaroola Astronomical Observatory that houses the largest privately owned telescope in Australia, and be prepared to be stunned by the beauty of the clear night sky.

Day 07
Arkaroola to Leigh Creek Distance: 129km, Approx. Travel Time: 3HR
Leigh Creek to Parachilna Distance: 71km, Approx. Travel Time: 45MIN

From Arkaoola head west to the coal mining town of Leigh Creek, stopping along the way at Iga Warta for an Aboriginal cultural experience. Then, in the afternoon travel to Parachilna for an overnight stay at the Prairie Hotel, an Outback pub that offers a high standard of accommodation and an award-winning restaurant featuring Australian 'native' cuisine and a colourful front bar.

 

Day 08 Parachilna to Adelaide
Distance: 503km, Approx. Travel Time: 5.5HR
