Myths about drving to Australia
If you’ve ever toyed with the idea of doing an Australian road trip, but had some reservations, we’re clearing the path for you to start planning your trip Down Under by busting some common myths.

Myth 1 The Driving is Hard
With proper planning, the driving is easy. The driving conditions are excellent and the country does a good job of looking after its road infrastructure – highways and major roads are very well signposted. Speed limits differ from state to state but they're always clearly displayed. The byways and the towns they connect with are well provisioned with the needs of motorists – fuel is readily available. Australian car-hire companies offer 24-hour roadside assistance and the standard is excellent, the prices are reasonable, and GPS satellite navigation systems are widely available.

Myth 2 There are Kangaroos in the Streets
If you’re afraid of knocking down a roo while driving, don’t. In the cities you might encounter kangaroos on some golf courses, but mostly, the animals are kept in city zoos and reserves. That said, once you're out of the cities there are many opportunities for seeing Australian fauna in the wild, whether it be kangaroos and koalas or seals and penguins. In fact, seeing a wombat waddle across a foot path and hearing a kookaburra laugh in the bush are magical Aussie experiences to remember.

Myth 3 The Scenery is Flat and Brown
Australia has some of the planet's most spectacular and uncrowded landscapes, with plenty of opportunities for postcard-perfect photos. Although some of the landscape is brown and flat, the country has arguably the best beaches and most stunning coastlines in the world, tropical rainforests and towering strands of protected eucalypt, and giant wilderness areas that are rich in wildlife. These places take on different hues through the seasons and Australia can be visited all year round.

Myth 4 It’s Dangerous, and Easy to Get Lost
Regardless of how it might look, Australia's vast open spaces are actually very safe and the risk of getting lost is minimal. Outback routes have special considerations in terms of planning and equipment but if tourers stick to the routes nothing can go wrong. Request a GPS when hiring your car if in doubt. Follow the signs and the instructions of locals and there will be no danger. Australians are a helpful lot – ask someone for directions and they'll help you out every time. Sunburn is one of the biggest dangers, so pack lots of sunblock!

Myth 5 It’s an Expensive Trip
Travellers on a budget will find Australia surprisingly affordable. Many of the best things are free – sun, surf, clean water, fresh air, open space, amazing scenery. Major cities offer free transport from trams to buses, and value cards that offer good discounts for tours and attractions, including those beyond the city. Shopping at the local markets is affordable and fun, and a meal can cost just A$12 a head or less at many city eateries.
